3 Reasons to Get an Alberta ID Card

If you no longer have your drivers license, did you get your Alberta ID Card? This valuable piece of identification is necessary for many even if you no longer drive.

The Alberta ID Card is designed for those who do not drive, and do not have a drivers license. It is a form of government issued ID other than passport, that is easy to keep updated.

3 Reasons to Get an Alberta Identification Card

1. You need it to vote

You’ll often need Government photo ID that verifies your address to vote.

2. You need it to sell your home

All real estate agents are required by law to verify that your identity matches title of a property you are going to sell or buy. If you still own property, it is important to have Government photo ID to prove your identity.

3. Banks will need it

Financial institutions use photo identification as well. It may be hard to complete your banking needs such as setting up your power of attorney. Your bank will expect Government identification.

Beyond these needs for identification – it will help you prevent fraud from happening. By having a government issued photo identification, it is harder for someone to claim your identification as there is a photo on record. Stay safe and protect your data by getting an Alberta ID card once you are no longer driving.

You can get an Alberta ID Card at any registry office. The card is active for 5 years and will need to be renewed when it expires. Be sure to bring proof of residency when you go to pick one up.

For more information on protecting your identity or avoiding scams, review our Elder Abuse Information page.
